OVERVIEW

My time @UKG

I had an incredible opportunity to intern at the UKG 2023 summer and fall. As a UKG TechStar (=Intern), I met wonderful team members and other interns, and my internship was full of learning. My internship was extended to the fall, so I was lucky enough to be involved in multiple projects of various categories. My work is under NDA, so please reach out to me for more details.

WHAT I LEARNED

Document your work

Documentation is key for tracking progress and communicating with others. Well-documented work allows others better to understand your work, progress, and design! At a tech company, everything is fast-paced, so documentation plays an important role in preventing misunderstanding. Documentation especially saves everyone's time and effort, especially if a project has a bigger scope.

Ask questions & ask feedback

Every piece of information comes from communication. Asking questions helped me to understand project backgrounds, and asking for feedback allowed me to make better progress. However, there are always time limitations, and I learned that I must budget my time wisely to finish projects on time. Also, sometimes some feedback should be on hold for future improvement considering other team's bandwidth, and designers also need to consider that too.

Look beyond a single project

For juniors, the easier it is to choose the best solution only for the project they are working on right now, and I also was no exception. However, I learned that short-sighted decision-making ultimately leads to losses. Even when designing a small element, you need to look at the bigger picture to see how it can be used and its impact on the bigger picture.
